New Year, New You?

Have you made a New Years Resolution? and if so, are you struggling to stick to it already?

Over 40% of people will make a New Years Resolution this year and 35% of those that do make them will break them by the end of January. A shocking 77% will never see their resolutions through to a successful result at all!

Making New Year Resolutions has been around for a long time...It can be traced back 4000 years ago, when the Babylonians would ring in the New Year with a 11 day festival in Mid March. They would reportedly make promises to the Gods in the hope that they'd earn good favour in the coming year.

There are some interesting New Year traditions in different parts of the world too... in China they coat their doors in a fresh coat of red paint to symbolise happiness and good luck, and Russians focus on education and learning more as their New Year Resolution.

Top resolutions are to lose weight/eat healthily, to make self/life improvements and to manage finances better. Any of these sound familiar to you too?

So, if you've made a New years Resolution or want to fine tune it to ensure it becomes a lasting change, follow these tips...

  • Make only one resolution and keep it specific - To say you want to lose weight is too vague, instead set an actual amount of weight you want to lose and a time frame...e.g. 'I want to lose 10lbs by March 1st'

  • Set goals that are manageable and break each goal down into sub goals so that you can easily see your progress. Don't forget to reward yourself along the way too!

  • Avoid previous resolutions and don't run with the crowd. Think about where you are in your life and make your resolution meaningful to you.

  • Expect to revert to old habits from time to time...if you do, see it as a temporary setback and not failure.

  • Tell your friend's and family about what you want to achieve. This support is more likely to motivate you and keep you on track.

  • Keep it positive! Our sub-conscious mind doesn't like to give up something that has given some benefit to us, so its important to see that we are actually gaining something by making the changes we want to make. So, instead of giving up smoking, you are becoming a non-smoker and improving your health and saving money too!
